THROUGH GERMAN
EYES.
'Socialism" for the Army, We (the Times) have received the January and February isanes of the Sozialdemokratische Feld- post, a remarkable pericdical which is published in Berlin and circalates among the German Armies, It is issued twice s month from the Headquarters of the Socialist «j¬rity, batia evidently promoted, And presumably subsidised, by the German Government. Ostensibly a purely Socialist organ, the circulation of which in the Army is intended to dianiay (fficial im. partiality, the Feldpost is in reality Fatarated with official sigamente especially the arga mente which sie thought most necessary for the maintenance of moral.
The recent numbera berp in. cessantly on a few simple themes
the German Government's deep "love" of pęson, the patriotio sincerity of the Socialist Majority, the steady progrew of the German "peace ‹ffensive" and the unres sonableness of roomy-especially British-opinion, which make the continuation of the war for the present inevitable.
No bumber of the Filipat appears without suitable refer eaces to England. On January 1 it was noted that "the pesce movement in Eagland is con- steady growing, as is proved by the proceedings in the English Parliament on December 17 and 18." On January 15 the Feldp:st. comforted its readers with long extraca from a Christianis gewapsper, serving to demon“ strate the importance of Mr. E. D. Morel, the anti-con- scriptionial, and the leaders of English "proifism" generally., Some careful notes on the nego ciations with Roris and on peeches by Mr. Lloyd George and President. Wilson conclude 38 follows:
***The hope of general peace is at prezent not very great. It looks as if the French and lungs lih absolutely desire, a decision in the West with American help. Unless the Eatente, peoples maks an end of their present Govern
ments, they will hardly get pence." On Febuary 1 the Feldpost disposer in a few lines of the war aims of British Labour, saying:
Very little has come out of the revision of the war sima of the English Labour Party. Some secant has been taken of the need for find democratic phrases, and s few anti-Imperialist paraphrases, not of a binding character, have been inserted. In fact the Memorandam is a mas- terpiece of English cant, and Havelock Wilson, the leader of the English seamen, was perfectly right in calling it the most contradiatory document that has ever been presented to's Labour Congrees."

The following are characteristic
from the issue extracta February 15:--
Wa Germans desire nothing more than we desire an early peace, but we decidedly refuse to submit to Wilson, to be slarved by England, or to commit sainide on the advice of Trotsky, Terrible though, every hour is which separates as from peace, we must inform our enemies that, althougb we Germans have always requir ed a little domestic quarrelling, we still present an absolutely united front to the enemy with-

"It seems to us that the domes. tio debates as to whether Count Hertling expressed himself with eficient clearness, and whether Czernin spoke "quite differently," are not of war-deciding import-*- aaos. No doubt a clearing up of German wir sims would be appropriate in the second half of the fourth year of war. Butter it. never be forgotten that for France the only decisive" quselion is Alsace Lorraine, and for England, în spite of all hide-and-seek, the only decisive question is Meso potamia and Bagdad. Not even Italy, who has been thrown back, is willing to revise her war sime.with these. “statesmen.”
"If we were in the first year of there be no deception the fact that war, it might perhaps be vaid that na long as these politicians with Germany ought to set a good their emashing schemes of con example, and that the others quest in power, it will hardly be would follow. But who can still possible to reach an agreement seriously believe that Wilson, Of course this is not a rosy pro- Lloyd George, and Clemenceau spect, but the German Socialists would follow ?
