BRITISH NAVY'S DARING RAID.
Interviews with the Participatora
Landed, April 24 "The Daily Chronicle" interviewed Naval-mon from Zee- brugge, who confidently assert that they caught the Ger mam napping, instancing how the men of the destroyerswhich pengiming the harbour boarded the enemy destroyers and found the guns covered with tarpaulina. During the whole oper ation rain poured down. The participators apparently.com art the destruction of the dock gates and state, they say the waters of the canal rushing out and ships inside strain- ing at their hawsers. A Gallipoli hero said that as far as naise was concerned the explosions on the mole and the hurricane crashing of the shells made a tenfold hell It appears the lost British destroyer was one of those which Widred the harbons and began daringly torpedoing Germany destroyers lying under the shelter, of the mole. She was ultimately sunk by terrific pointblank gunfire.
Owing to the mist and rain the attacking ships got within half a mile of the harbour before picking up the mole light. The Colman defences discovered the British just a the latter located the mule light, and a blaze of star lights brilliant ly dilhouetted the attacking cruiser, whereupon, the enemy concentrated a terrific shalling of all calibres, including seventeen-inchers. Though they hit the cruiser she steam- *ed on and was seen to round the head of the mole and reach the harbour. The cruiser got alongside the mole and landed a large party, of men, acopropanied by Marines. Some special gangways were broken by the, shellfire, increasing the difficulties of disembarkation, while a heavy machine- gunning gave the raiders a hot reception. One by one the guns on the mole were destroyed. The flame-throwers at- tacked the munition stores, etc. The mole contained valu able seaplane hacgars, a large railway shed, ammunition sheds and naval storesheds, and bristled with guris. Mean, while, covered by the operations proceeding on the mole, the blockships approached the harbour, anchored at the entrance and were sunk within twenty-three minutes.
~
When the landing parties completed their work, remain- ing ashore an hour, the men were taken aboard at a given signal and the damaged croiser began to retura Among handreds of shells fired at her ane seventeen-incher had struck her upper works forward, injuring the steering gear. She signalled the escort ships for assistance, but under her own. steam managed to reach the protecting-cruisers.
An eyewitness said that when he saw the damage be scarcely believed it possible that the cruiser could have fosted. When coming out of the harbour Games shot from her funnels ten feet high. Despite her years she must have made the fastest time she ever performed."
Full details of how the attacking ships could reach harbour and effect the return journey despite the closeness of the range have not transpired, but doubtless it was due to the efficiency of the smoke screens mentioned by Sir Eric Geddes.
The crew of a concrete ship which went to Zeebrugge state that the attack was opened by a shot from the Vindio- tive, maahing the lighthouse on the mole when the beam of the lighthouse came round. Their ship had two boats. One was smashed and the crew jumped into the other when the ship was sinking. The boat was packed with men and was heavily fired on, the ammunition including nine-inch sbella; but they safely reached the Vindictive. They stated the Union Jack was left flying on the mole.
