THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, MONI

1018

EARLIER TELEGRAMS

(Continued from Fage L.).

THE MUNITION WORKERS.

The King's Appreciation.

*London, April 20.“- The Press Burean states that the King has expressed his high approval of the extensions of the Munitions Ministry, officials, employers and munition workers, during this critical time. His Majesty states he has learned that practically 'all' losses and expenditure of munitions during the battle have already been made good without undue depletion of reserves- There are now actually more serviceable guns, machine-guns and aeroplanes at the front than on the eve of the offensive, and all other supplies are abundant.

THE EXPORT OF CEMENT,

The Government Committee's Investigations........

London, April 90. The Government Committee appointed to investigato the export of cement from the United Kingdom to Holland, which it was recently, asserted was re-exported from Helland to Belgium whore 'it was utilised for German defences and particularly pillboxes, reports that the evidence does not substantiate the alleged re-export and further points out that such British, export does not advantage Germany by releasing rement for military purposes instead of supplying Holland because Germany's cement resources are most ample.

The Committee recommends the continuance of British export to Holland as mutually beneficial,"

BITISH WORKERS BUSY.

Strikes Reduced za à Minimum.

London, April 20.

The Home Secretary, speaking at Kingston on Thames, said that since the great offensive began the workers had joined up in greater numbers than ever and the effect on strikes of which we used to hear so much and now heard so little was to reduce them to the smallest The total lost time among war workers through strikes was really in twelve months about 25 per cent of the total.

EGYPTIAN COTTON.

Bright Prospects Predicted.

Cairo, April 20.

The Acting Financial Adviser, Sir W. E. Brunyate, has issued his ncte for the 1918 Budget, He refers to the pro gress of cotton cultivation, and the difficulties of fuel sup- plies, mainly overcome by the development of the Red Sea, oil fields and the very valuable discovery whereby gas is distilled from vegetable refuse. Hurgdada oilfield, discovered in 1914, is turning out fifteen thousand tons monthly. The balance of trade' for the three and a half year's represents an addition to Egypt's capital resources of fifty million Egyptian pounds. Sir W. E. Brungate's note leaves the best impression as to the present position and future 'prospects of Egypt.

IRELAND AND CONSCRIPTION.

Nationalists Organising Opnositlar.

London, April 21,

A conference of fifty-five Nationalist Commoners at Dub- lin presided over by Mr. Dillon decided to remain in Ireland

to organise the opposition against conscription.

Fifteen hundred trade union delegates at a meeting at Dublin Mansion House pledged resistance to conscription and fixed April 23 as the day for stoppage of all work to enable workers to sign the pledge.

THE MAN-POWER PROBLEM.

Fx mptions Canc-lled.

London, April 21

A Royal Proclamation cancels exemptions to men fram. nineteen to twenty-three, granted by tribunals or Govern- ment Departments. There are certain exceptions, chiefly doctors, and certificates are granted for the collieries, re- cruiting and the Courts.

INDIA'S LOYALTY.

What India Các Yet Supply.

London, April 20.

The Indian National Congress telegraphed to Mr. Lloyd George and the Viceroy: "The Prime Minister's stirring message to India and the Viceroy's hearty response are entirely in accord with Indian sentiment. Youths whether Irish or Indisa must be made to feel that they are not fight ing to establish a principle abroad which is not applied to them. India alone can supply five. to ten millions of men. Our league would be willing to work and place our humble resources at the disposal of the Government therefor."
