A GERMAN LIE REFUTED.

A

London, March 19. The German press has been making most of a statement attributed to German missionaries in Togoland declaring that the tribes were obliged in the middle of 1918 to become English or elect to become German and that those who chose Germany were punished by forced labour. An official state-⠀ ment published in London affirms that the above is pure in- Tention. The fature of Togoland was not discussed with the natives and forced labour coased when German rale ended. There can be no doubt from the spontaneous expres- sions of chiefs and others regarding the desire of the tribes to remain British.

ACTIVITY IN THE WEST.

London, March 15.

A French communique states: The artillery duel con- tinues on the right of the Meuse. Our fire drove of enemy reconnoîtring parties attempting to reach our lines in the region of Handanmont and north-west of Bezonvaux. There is fairly great artillerying north of Le Violu, on both banks of the Fare and in the Vosges.

London, March 10.

Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig reports: We made ve cessful raids on Villers Ghislain, La Vacquerie and Lois Grenier. The Portuguese raided trenches eastward of Neurs Chapelle and brought back prisoners and two machine guns. We repulsed three raids on Fleurbaix and Bois Grenier, inflicting losses. There is hostile artillerying in the forward and back areas of the Ypres sector.

A French communique reports: A detachment last even- ing penetrated the enemy lines in the region of Rheing to a depth of a kilometre and destroyed numerous occupied dugouts, bringing back nine prisoners. The energy at mid- night after sharp artillery preparation carried out a coup-de-main north-east of Sillery, which broke down under" fire. There is a violent artillery duel on the right of the Meuse, particularly in the region of Hill 344.

CANADA'S WAR FERVOUR.

Ottawa, March 19.

The Duke of Devonshire, at the opening of Parliament, said he was confident that the legislators, animated with the analtoring spirit which inspired them during the long anxious years of effort and sacrifice, would sustain the high canae in which the country had already borne a splendid part, The effort confronting them demanded the sternest resolve; but their hearts were as firm and enrage as un- daunted as among their countrymen holding the line beyond. the seas, who still sustained a record of distinguished achievement, Beinforcements necessary to keep up the Canadian forces at full strength had been provided and would be maintained in the fature. The industrial and fioan- cial stability Canada, despite the critical conditions, hed been well maintained. Foreign trade exceeded all records" and the favourable balance of trade was vastly increased. The effort of the Allied nations' would continue until the triumph of the Allied cause. He paid a tribute to the United States, whose energies, power and vast resources were now beginning to be felt strongly.

THE SPANISH S TUATION.

London, March 18.

The bewildering mass of belated telegrams from Spain teem to indicate that Lacierva still has the upper band. The postal employees struck owing to dissatisfaction with their conditions of employment, whereupon the military overtook the post and telegraph services under Lacierra..

The King opened Parliament on Monday, and his rigor- ous speech foreshadows drastic administration and economic and Enancial reforms, particularly in the direction of pro- moting Spanish overseas trade, He reminded Parliament that it was expected to lead the nation in the postwar struggle.

WAR RESTRICTIONS AT HOME.

London, March 19.

Londoners are little moved by the "curfew order" prac tically closing down everything at 9.30 p.m. as it is recognis ed as an urgent war measure. It is expected that shop windows will no longer be lighted. The consumption of coal for domestic purposes has been reduced by one sixth. Train and bus services have been largely curtailed.

AN ERRONEOUS REPORT.

London, March 19.

In the House of Commons, Mr. Bonar Law said the statement that German prisoners are now being carried on French hospital ships was cronDEOUS.

"and 30,550 against the comb out.

THE ALLIES AND DUTCH SHIPPING.

IN

London, March 19,

The Government has freebly notified the Dutch Govern- ment that the Allies will immediately proceed to requisition Dutch shipping aaless Holland unequivocally accepts the last Allied note theresnent, to which a reply, expected yesterday, has so far not been received.
