SHIPPING NEWS:
The Mitsubishi Firm. - Towards the end of last year the Mitsubishi firm converted Its shipbuilding and mining departm |ments into a separate joint-stock: company, but no such step has been taken in regard to its banking department, which is working with capital of ¥1,000,000, It is now reported that the management of the Mitsubishi firm has decided to reorganise ita." banking departe iment into a joint-stook company with a capital of about Y30,000- C00. It is expected that the decision will materialise in about
two months.
Yamashita Kisen Kaisha
The Yamashita Steamship Co., Tokyo and Kebe, has announced the decision of its Board of | Directors to increase the firm's capital to 790,000,000 from the present amount of Y10,000,000. The firm is planning, with the increased capital, to replace as many old ships as possible with new up-to-date opes, and is also . contemplating inaugurating a steamship line touching at the principai ports in India, China, and America. As a preliminary to opening this service, the firm has recently established a branch ̈ office at Singapore, which will be a sort of a general agengy looking after the branches in Java) Sumatra, the Straits Settlement, Borneo, and the South Pacific Islands.
Brisk Immigration of Chinesa Coolies.
The s.s. Yiulee owned by the Chingkee Co. brought about 600 Chinese coolies from Chefoc recently. The D. K. K's, 6.8. Rychel Maru also made the port from Tsingtao with 780 coolies. The Marine Office authorities are of opinion that the immigration of coolles will be much brisker this season because of the famine in Shantung which naturally induces the poorer, Chinese to seek a more comfortable place to live in. According to the remarks of an officer of the e.s. Kyodo Maru. No 16 which recently landed at Dairen 1,507 coolies, some of them intended to be men- dicants in Manchuria and others had nothing to eat during the voyage. They tried in vain to appease hunder - by drinking water. Some 7 tons of pure water were used for this pathetic purpose during the trip
