Japaneso Vessels Under

The Japanese vessels ? now chartered to the Allies number. 19, totalling 65,534 boss, while Japanese vessels indirectlylaarv ing. the Allies are estimated at about: 100,000 tona. The total tonnage of Japanese ships in the Allee service,is, therefore, roughly 160,000 tong This is less than one-tenth of Japan's total tonnage, which ever at the end of 1916, amounted to 1,696,631 tons, Japan Chronicles"

Shipping Broker that Failed.

No doubt too much prominence has been given to the bright side of shipping speculation for it is precisely the means by which so many funanarikin have been created since the outbreak of the war to the complete ignoring of the other side, of which there are not wanting examples. The latest example, is that of the Kurihara Shokai, of Muroran. Since the early months of last year the firm has chartered and re-chartered the Taugara maru and about sixtoon other vessels, ranging from 2,000 to 3 000 tons, at charter. rates between Y30 and Y36, All these have been speculative deal", which the firm now finds it impossible to maintain any

It has accordingly.. longer, surrendered all its assets to the creditors for settlement of accounts. The assets are, of course, insufficient to meet the liabilities, and since the charter transactions are verycom- plicated, a far-reaching effect is feared in shipping circles...

N. Y. K. Vadivostok Service.

As already mentioned, say the "Japan Chronicle," following the outbreak of disturbances in Russia, the Nippon Yusen Kaisha suspended all its steamets which had been transporting munitions of war from the United States to Vladivostok. The situation in Russia remained unimproved, and shipments for Vladivostok were only those intended for consumption in that part, goods traffio further inland being paralysed. Accordingly the N.Y.-. K, only maintained the Risshin- maru regularly between-Vladi- vostok and Japan for transport of foodstuffs and general goods. The situation in Vladivostok has recently become wors, and even" for that port alone there are not sufficient shipments. The Com- pany has now decied also to. suspend the Biabia-maru, for the Vladivostok service. With this the regular N.Y.K.'service has been

Freights."

The Nippon Yusen Kaisha says the JapanTM „Chronicle,”* intends again, to raise European freights from this month, and this has been notified, to shippers by the Kobe office. The extent of the proposed advance has not yet been published, but the Otaru. office of the Nippion Yusen Kaisha has already announced that the present freight of 500s. per ton for beans will be in reased to 625s. in February and to 750s. in March. From this it is taken for granted that the Kobe office will also announce the same rate of advance. The shippers in Kobe met to consider the proposal, and decided to ask for a certain.

RDINE. MATHESON & CO., LTD. concession in regard to the time of the éxécution of the proposal. It has been usual for the Nippon... Yusen-Kaisha, or any other steamship company for that matter;;to raise freight rates at two or three months notice. But the present, proposal is to raise freight immediately by 125s, in February and by spotuer 1258, in Match, This will cause consider Fable "afficultywhere forward- contracts have beez made with customers abroad For fa-tance, the proposed indresse in freights will make the present price of Y17 per 100 skin for green peas higher by 2.20 or 17.3 In the circumstances the shippers have decided to ask the Nippon Yusen aisha to postpone the date for the execution of the proposal, They will formally approach the NY-Kauthorities in Tokyo on the matter after conference with representatives of the strippers in Yokohama and Otaru
