Mr. Edison recently submitted to the United States Shipping Board a detailed plan to equip - 100,000 tons of sailing vessels with engines, to make them;" serviceable for Transatlantic war traffic. The Government have under control. 538 sailing. vessele, representing 1,310,000 tone. Another 40,000 tons is to be taken over from the French Govetameat. If the Edison plan is adopted, 700,000 tons will be kept for coastwise traffic and the ather 1,000,000 for war service.
