approved bonds and shares acceptable as securities with the object of making its services more widely available, This object, however, is not fully attainable so long as the restrict- ions regarding the term of accommodation exist. According- ly the Bank of Japan has now decided to do away with those restrictions. An indirect effect of the abolition will be to reduce the difference between the' Bank and the market rates: It goes without saying that increased deposits by the public increase the credit of banks, and this in turn goes towards increasing their other transactions. In some cases at present even a higher rate of interest is given for deposits than is charged for loans,so much so that some people, it is said, are making a practice of borrowing money from one bank and putting it in anotherbank, thus making money quickly with no capital. The struggle among banks for the absorption of deposits is particularly keen in June and December, because full figures are to be published in the semi- annual business report. So the struggle is now very keen. This is said to be particularly the case with a certain large bank which lost in June last the foremost position in regard to the amount of deposits, a position con- tinuously held for many years before, and which has since: been doing its utmost to recover that place of honour. It is said that at present the rate of interost allowed on deposits is. sometimes as high as sen 1.8
