Torpedoed Captain.

A captain of a vessel which had been lost through enemy action recently received, after returning home, a bill for £40 from the Board of Trade, in respect "of expenses incurred in mainten ance and travelling between the sinking of his ship and his arrival in this country. The Mercantile Marine Service Association approached the Board of Trade in the matter, and it was explained” that, whilst provision was made for crews in such circumstances, captains were placed in a different position by the Shipping Acts, and that the Board had no authority to incur expenses on their behalf. But the shipowners have come to the rescue. Ins future the expenses of a stranded. captain will be paid by his owner.

letter which accompanied it is** perhaps worthy of reproduction as follows: Dear Sir,---I am directed by the management committee of the Imperial Merchant Service Guild-which is the great representative body of the captains and officers of the Merchant Service to state with what great pleasure they send to you as a contribution to King George's Saifèrs' Fand the sum of one hundred guiqaas, for which please find a cheque herewith. The Guild are truly grateful to those who have initiated this fund so sadly needed. in the interests of our marchant- Beatarare, to whom it will be a source of the greatest encourage- ment in these times of extraord- inary stress and peril. --We also
