Many Hot and Successful Fights in Cambrat Offensive.

1.

British Army Headquarters in France, Sandey, November 25.-- The work of British airplanes. daring the present cffensive forms a chapter in itself, Despite the vile weather, which compelled them to operate within in a few feet of the ground, they kept steadily at their task and rendered invaluable assistance, both in reconnaissance and of. fensive operations. There have been almost continual battles be- tween German infantry and British sirmen fiving as low se thirty feet above the ground. Naver before bse this kind of warfare been carried cat on such a large sosle. "Pilots have attack- ed infantry and gun oreve indis- criminately wherever they en- countered them, and have it flict- ed heavy casualties on the enemy with bombs and machine guns. # The nature of the fighting may be realised from the experience of a British pilot whose machine ane literally shot to pieces by rifle and machine-gun fire and who finally éraabed down bebind his own lines with ten bullet holes through his clothing, although be himself was unhurt. Another Joang airman yesterday present ed himself at headquartere after having been shot down for the third time within two days. He was delighted over his experienos and immediately applied for another machine so that he might go out again.

Qqo sviitor attaiked a colom of German infantry marching in close formation and harled two high power bambe directly among them. The troops scat tered, and the srimen whirled away becaw two bespe of dead about bags oraters which the. bombe had torn in the zones There were insumerable cases of airies anpcessfully bombing **Tarom- troop transports, and namber of

oat either by machin-gun fire at clown range or by bombi,

He

Many of the airmen hed mira- culous escape from death, sar some have gone to awell the com- pay of brave men who have given their lives for their country. Among the hairbreadth escapes reported is that of an aviator whose machine was torn to pieces while he was fighting German infantry with bis machine-gar, the was caught in shell-fire sad the winge of his machine were abot away. Forta- nately, he was flying only twenty, or thirty feet above the ground and close to his own lines. He fell in No Man's Land and was arbort. He immediately came under rifle and maobine-gan fire, but he found a German rifle with some ammunition and engageď ̋ the enemy singlehanded. A he fired he worked his way back until he reached one of his own patrole.

There is not much humour in fighting of this nature, bat one incident occurred which is making the British sir service laugh. One of the youngest British sirmen was flying at a low altitude when foor enemy mechiae-gaDR opened on him. He swooped down and abot three of bie opponents as be swept by. The fourth machine-gun kept fir ing, and the aviator, in a spirit of boyish mischief, land over the side of his oar and wriggled hia fuges in joyous derision st the German. Just so he was in the midst of this interesting per-, foimanos his opponent pat s bullet quarely through the palm of the airman's opra band. The aviator" presented himself at a dressing a'ation, aid when ques tioned admitted the truth," with crestfallen face. Es consolation for his wogad was roare af laugh- ter and advice to be more polite to a Bache in the future.
