SHIPPING NEWS.

Strike at Yokohama Dockyard. Upwards of 800 workmen employed at the Yokohama Dockyard struck work on the 6th, inat. They selected nine re- presentatives who presented -a request to the Manager for 30 per cent, more wages in the event of certain special allowances being. diso ntinued. The men went to- the Dockyard yesterday, but did no work. As it was feared that the strike might spread to other workman, the Dockyard granted the strikers a holiday. The Board of Directors called a meeting to consider their reply to the strikers. The treable is due to the fact that the D ckyard, owing to the American embrgo on iron and steel materials, may be compelled to abolish certain allowances which are now made to the workman.

October and November usually witness the heaviest precipitative of the year and if the cut" is not disturbed until December 31, it is believed that the canal may be regarded as finally safe. There have been many minor earthquake shocks in the Canal zone since the open- ing of the canal, but none of them created any damage, while the general history of the isthmus in this respect is excellent, as far. as the records go, back to Balbos's day The dredging activities bave been diminished and do not need.. to interfere with traffic. Two of the largest saction dredgers have been converted into cargo boats, and others are being used in the reclamation of swamp land re- quired for spe ïal purposes. This reclamation work has created (much valuable land adjacent to
