FREE TRADE AFTER WAR.
of tez auciety of Meatre. Alber!
American League Oppposed to Commercial War with Germany.
Boston November 9-Yester- Aay's meeting of the AmeticsoTM Free Trade L-gue resulted in a reorganisation of the management in relation to office administration, though the real control is not changed, and in the adoption of a. policy, for activities after the war. Ono of the new lines of effort will b to obtain membership in the League of profesore of economics in the colleges and universities, in order that the icieplific soundness of free trade principles may be put to the front with more energy and result than be been the case in the recent Listory of the League.
Another important feature of the new policy is that, in preparing for activity to follow the war, the League will oppose the plan laid down by the Entente Allies, before the United States entered the war, of making commercial war apou Germany. The League holda that economic war will be a catastrophe "for" all parties, and that sound policy for all the nations demands that they cc-operate in trade to the fallest possible extent. It is the par. pose of the Leegae, under the Dew. administration, to demon. strate the destructiveness of the protective tariff system upon the general welfare of the natione. Economic writera are expcoted to contribute articles for the Free Trade Broadside, the quarterly organ of the League. Efforte will be made id increase the member, ship generally, and copies of the Broadside will be sent to each mailing lists as promiss good

M, Patnam will have in article ia be fortbroming Broadside in which he will take positions enowing the effect of the 'protect ire torff, from the free trade ppint of view, in preventing proe- perity which would be enjoyed ander Lormal conditions; also opposing the proposed inter- ntior al boycott against G: rmany.
The league has not been se active recently as in the year? directly folowing itsorganisation. The new policy is agreed to by the management which will be responsible for the saccess of the falare and it is hoped that pub licity and energy will make the existence and the principles of the league more familiar to the public.

We have no re- cord of a previous movement af. 31. in one day, either up or down, but we mention that fall of 21. tok place on September 27. The immediate cause of the rise WAS the same as that which carried the price to 554, about a month previously, namely, the ecarcity of supplies on a firm market and absence of any supplies epscal the re-eliction of Mr. Georgeatively held.
