China's. Salt Revenue Surplus.
The Salt Revenue surplus for the month of November amounted to $8,000,000, according to the Peking Daily News. This sum was paid over to the Government on the 4th instant through the Bank of China and Bank of Cam munications at Shanghai and the French Rank at Canton.

The S. P. C. A. In Japan, One learns with satisfaction from the Japan Chronicle that: the Inspectors of the Kabe S. P. O. A. had a busy time during November. No less than 87 cases of over-loading horses were dealt with during the mouth, and in 12 cases help was procured for horses dragging loade up steep roads. Sistean casea of beating horens were dealt with by the Inspectors, and sir men found cruelly jerking the reins of their horasa were warned. Nine sick horses and other animals were cared for daring: the month. The Society appears-i to be due to foreign enterprise.
Captain Soweby AL C Mr. A. de O. Sowerby has re- ceived a letter from his brother, Captain Edward B. Sowerby, R.A.M.O., which announces that the latter has been decorated with the Military Crose. Captain Sowerby was born in Taiyuanfu, Shensi, in 1889. In 1899, with the rest of his family he was taken home to be educated, thus just escaping the Boxer“ massacres in Shansi. Be, r mained in England till 1914, being educated in Bath and Bristol, and taking his medical degrees M.B. and BS. in London. In 1914 he came to Obins in the English Baptist Mission, but returned to England in 1915 to join up.
