Officer Transferred from Army to Navy. After a considerable amount of delay in the matter, we are pleased to say (says the "Journal of Commerce") that still another merchant officer in the person of Mr. W. Darling has recently been transferred from the Army to Commissioned rant as Sub- Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Reserve. It was in the spring of the present year that the Imperial Merchant Service Guild first heard from this officer, he being then at the Front serving in the 17th Battalion of the King's Royal Rife Corps. Steps were at once taken to submit his case to the Admiralty with the result after much correspondence that he has at last been transferred, after 22 months' service in the Army, of which nearly fourteen months have been on active service. Prior

to joining the Army this officer, who holds a master's certificate,“ served as junior and troop offiosr in the P. and O. steamer Palermo. He is a New Zealander by birth, having been born at Olinton. His many friends will wish him the best of good fortune in his new rank. In writing to thank the Guild, Sub-Teutenant Darling I must thank you very says: much for this transfer-I have had two winters, in the trenches, and do not know how I would have got through another."

The Past Recalled

Mr. Thomas Ramsay, of South- wick, Sunderland, who, with his wife, celebrated the 60th anniversary of their wedding recently, is old enough to remember the time when there were even more shipyards on the river Wear than there are now, and when the local industries"

more varied in their character, for his memory goes back to the period when there were about 100 small shipyards, four lime works, six bottle works" four potteries, and eight" or "ten forge or chain works and foundries on Wearside. He saw the building of the first iron ship ever constructed on the river, by Mr. George Clark and his boilermakers at the Wreath Quey, east of Wearmouth Drops, He himself started work at ten years of age at a small röpory at South- wick. For five years thereafter he served in a local office, after which he went for a voyage ins wooden barque to Mauritius, Aden, and Colombo, which voyage, the barque being dis- masted in the Indian Ocean, took 14 months. In 1857 Mr. Ramisay weat into the office of Mr. Samuel ·· Tyzack and Co., Monkwearmouth Ironworks, then in Bonner's Field, sad continued in their employ for the long term of 55k years as cashier and accountant, retiring through ill-health-in 1912 on a pension granted by the Company,
