On Sites of Old Calcutta Fort.
Antigaarion interest will be aroused in connection with some pieces of metal that were recently seized by the police from two ballock carta while on the way to Balliaghata, saya the Advocate of India for it now transpires that these were dag out from the site of the old fort in Badge Badge.
A contractor was engaged to fill a tank which lies in the ground Intely purobased by the Port Commissionera for the extension of their Badge Badge oil sheds, and his men were cutting a drain to lead away the super-flow of the tank to a neighbouring jheel, when they came arose the remains of a concrete pillar. It is under stood that when this pillar was dug out a quantity of old metal was found underveeth. It is not known who actually gave the order for removing the metal, but any bow it was seized by the police while being carted away.
'There is no knowing whether there pieces of metal were only recently buried, bat: from the circumstances of the discovery it is possible that they were lying there since the early days of British rale, for on local enquiry it is found that on the locality where the excavations are being carried out a fort existed at one time, having been built by the Nawab of Marshidabad, pillar în question probably formed part of the building. A special cfficer beld charge of this fort which apparently on- manded the shipping in the river.
The
The Ven. Archdeacon Fir- minger states that at the time) when Lord Olive osme to re-cap- tora Calontţa în 1757, Admiral Watson proposed to capture this fort by surprise at night. But ** drunkan sailor went ashore ard shouted to imaginary men to follow him, and called out to the cfficer in charge of the fort to aurrender. The latter, beina throughly taken in by the rare cried "Mercy Kamerad,” as it Wire, and gató kimmelf up together with the entire garrison.
Admiral W
stoo, however, was nct at all pleased, as he wanted to capture the fort with military glory. Toere was a fort kept at Badge Badge by the English,-1 perhaps the same fort, and in 1776 it wae very much streng thened on the expectation of the arrival of a French feet. What is known lset of this fort is that in 1785 an invalid corps was kept | there. It ie not know when it was diemantled. Some ruins of the magazine of the old fort were visible within the last few years. "As regards the pieces of metal
which have been discovered and are described as lead, the Arch- deacon believes them to be kest
·ledge brought by ships in ballast.
In this connection it may be mentioned that some few yeara ago two or three old cannonballs were similarly found-while_ex- cavating earth in the tame locality.
It is reported that the police have formed an opinion that they Sirear has not committed sn offence under the Indian Pens! Code of criminal breach of trust, but an offence under the Treasure Trove Act,
According to this Act, it is asid that the finder is entitled to four- fifibe and the Government to one-Efth of the property or ite ralus,
In any case, the Sireer, it is maintained, bud no right or tile to the property and that the Port Commissioners should be con- sidered to be the faders..
The care i sa interesting one sad la being enquired into further.
