Canada's Industry,

Some idea of Canada'a luge industrial development as ault of the war may be gained “ from the estimate tha its machinery equipment for imanU facturing is of a capacity twice or three times greater than its home trade requirements demand. No wonder expert thought is being given to the problem of how to find employment after the war for the thousands of factories that bave sprung up. Otherwise. at least half the plants will have to be scrapped when war orders Cease to flow in
Gold.
Writing from London on Octo- ber 18, Messrs Samuel. Montagu & Co, sayThe Bank of England gold reserve against the note issue shows an increase of £607, 00, as compared with last week's return. It is announced from New York that $718,000 in gold have been engaged for ship- ment to Chile. The Transvaal gold output for September 1917, amounted to £1,135,607 as com pared with £3,277,400 in Septem- ber 1916 and £3,214,079 in August. 1917. Reports received from Nome, Alaska, atata that the beary summer rainfall will help ia the production of gold, cwing to the operation of washing auriferous soil having been per- formed by natural forces. Traces of platinum, now a much more precious metal than gold, have been found in the lower Yu on. |Todo-Japanese Balance of Trade.
Mention has already been made of the proposals for increas- ing the tonnage on the Indian service and for extending the term of drafts for encouraging exports to India by reducing the difficulties attending the question of aquaring the balance of trade- between Japan and India. A farther measure is now suggested. and that is the encourarement of the "export of South Seas com- modities, especially Java sugar to India. It is said that with this end in view the Government has slready induced the Mitsui.. Furukawa and Suzuki firms to buy about 350,000 tons of Java sugar, India used to import & large quantity from Java, but recently the import has greatly decreased owing to the scarcity. of tonnage. As a result," the price of Java-sugar has fallen. ufficiently to make it remunera- tiva for vessels to be sent from this country to Java for the .ex. port of sugar to India. The price of the 350,000 tons bought for export to India by the thre Japanese firms mentioned estimated at Y 52,000, 0. Wha freight and other charzes fe taken into account, the total I port price will be about Y5790- 000. It is expected that 119, if “ successfully carried out, vll go a long way toward providing the wherewithal recessary fr. the
