Tribute to the Mercantlle

Marine."

Mr. Cecil Holden held an in- quest at Birkenhead, recently, concerning the death of Arthur George Patrick (3t), of 87, Marion road, Chelsea, London, who was fifth enginer on board a ship torpedoed by an enemy sub- marine. The torpedo struck the ship on the starboard side and penetrated the engine-room. Deceased and other three man were killed. The Coroner said this was the first case of this kind in the town, and expressed the hope that it would be the last.. It was a very sad thing, he continu d, that a man of de- erassed's age should have met his death in this way, and, as the jury would readily appreciate, he had given his life in the geceral interests of the country. (Hear, hear.) it was not necessary to say anything with regard to the action of the Mercantile Marine during times past. but their wonderful courage, steadfastness. and resourcefulness had been instrumental in bringing to naught the schemes of the enemy and rightly exciting the admirat- » ion of the world and deservedly bringing to themselves the complete gratitude of the country, The jury associated themselves with these remarks and requested that their sympathy be conveyed to the widow and children of the deceased. They returned verdict of Death from a facturad skull, due to the action of the enemy.

British Women's National

Memorial to Seamen.. Under the auspices of the Liverpool Seamen's Friendly Society, Mrs. G. Grattan Guinness, of London, gave address in the Gordon Smith Institute, Paradise-street, Liver- pool, on "How the Women of England can Help the Sailors." Mis. Geo. Downic presided; and there was a fair attendance of ladies. Mrs. Grattan Guinness said the war had taught them unity; and they needed more and more to learn the larson. They had hardly realised what the merchant seamen were to them B9 an Empire, and what a tremendous debt of gratitude they owed to them, for they bad gone forth to fight against the greatest horrors until recently without guns to defend themselves. She believed that every seamen was ̧ living up to the very letter of Nelson's famous dictum, "Eig- land expects every man to do his duty." They had had in the homes of the British and Foreign Sailor's Society in the first eight months of the year 15,654 men from mined or torpedoed ships, who represented the crews of 584 vessels. There were thousands of men standing in need of help, and she had a scheme for raising.. £21,000 to celebrate the “coming
