a communication from one of its members containing the following statement, viz.On my way. across; I heard that the Govern ment had so far recoznise l Fervices of the Mercantile Marine as to grant 'masters' the title of 'captain' as a-right, and also to rank equal with captains of the Royal Navy, and I am to inquire if there are any real grounds for such a statement, or if the subject is at present, or has at any time, been under the consideration of the Board of Trade. May Iaid that such an announcement, if correct, would be received with ereat satisfaction by British shipmasters whose services to their country' bave proved of so valuable-a character during the war.-I am, yours faithfally, Signed, Thomas Sertt, Secretary." Replies were received from both departments, but that of the Admiralty may be quoted in full as being most comprehensive:- "Sir-With reference to your Letter of the 27th ultimo inquiring whether the title of captain" bas been conferred on masters of the Mercantile Marine, I am com--- manded by My Lords Commis sioners of the Admiralty to acquaint you that no action. has been taken by the.. Ad- miralty with 2 view to 2 change in the title or' status of these cfficers. In inserting it the London Gazette' the names of masters to whom honours have been awarded it has been the practice of this department, as a matter of courtesy, to follow the custom of the Merchant Service and to refer to there officers as captains, and possibly ths has given rise to the report to which you refer 1 am, Sir. your obedient servant (gd) Chas. Walker. It is an old and ** Coming trite saying that eventa cast, their shadows be- fore, and the ecuncil of the BES Iciation

**Commended for Good Services." Some time ago representations were made by the Mercantile Marine rervice Association, to the Admiralty with a view to obtaining some tangible recogni tion for those members of the Mercantile Marine who were "commended by his Majesty the King for good services." The argument, advanced by the Admiralty, that the simple notification in the "Gazette" wes/ sufficient carried no weight with the council of the association,.. who were only too well swATO that very often the "Gazette" never came under the notice of the relatives of those who were so honoured, whilst the men, being away on active servicë, were not always in a position to see it.The winners of the V.C., D8.0 and D.8.0. had their decorations to testify in after. years to their prowess in the time of danger. Why not then, give some tangible evidence to the men who had been commend- ed? It is gra ifing to note that this is now being done, and a member of the association, who had recently been commended, received the following latter from the Admiralty :-"Bir, I am com manded by My Lords Commies ioners of the Admiralty to forward with a certificate, showing you were commended forgood
