Dependence Upon Wireless Signals.
Correspondent Headquarters, F..nch Army, Oct. 26.-The log of the ill-fated. Zeppelin Armada, which sailed so tiamphantly from Oldenburg for England and rame to grief ra sigually in France, is gradually being alled in by the admissions of prisonera and material evidence held by the French in the shape of the "prfectly intact 149 which, sa already reported, surrendered to an elderly munition worker armed with a shot gun at Bourbon-lea Bains.
Two facta emerge clearly from the mase of detail collected by the French balloon ex- perte, firstly, that the „die- sater was primarily das 10 the breakdown of the system of etrering by wireless signals on which the Zeppeline depend; and, secondly, the sudden treach ery of the westbar. -
For the purposes of land wir. fare the Zeppelin is a weapon that can only be employed by nigh', and on dark night at that. Consequently the navigating off- cer of a Zeppelin cannot steer by optical observation as he cannot see what is below him. This is cepecially true of flights over an enemy country, in which an air- ship is forced to keep at the enormous beight of over 18 000ft. He cannot depend on bis com- pass, so be has no means of correcting the drift caveed by wind. Consequently he is forced' the depend on wireless signals to direct his course,
Every Z ppélin carries a wire Jees installation, both for sending and receiving, and keeps in constant tonch with several of the radio genemetrio statione which the Germans: Share- established for this purpose in their ferritory: "Firm them be
receives an unbroken stream of indcatape, which enable him 19 steer a correct course. Without them he is lost.
It is worthy of note that the Zeppelins bave been forced by fear of on aeroplane to navigate No. st such stupendous heights. By keeping 15,000ft. above the earth they hope to be able to elade the relatively slowly mounting aeroplane, which, al-
müch though
quicker horizontal flight than the Zappel- ir, takes considerable time to reach such an altitude,
Needless to say, this mesne the abandonment of all prstence that the Zeppelin attacks are directed only against military establish mente. A bombing officer, hover- ing on a dark night three miles! over an unknown country, can Do more distinguish what buildinge are below than if be were three hundred miles away."
On the night of the raid the Zeppeline, ateering at a height of, 15,000ft, and afraid to descend to a lower altitude, found themselves eaught in a violent and bitterly cold sortberly gale. The wireless directive went betray, or arrived in acdecipherable shape, and the airships, soon after reaching the English cout, last their bearings, It a probable from prisonera* etatements that most of them dropped their bomba as soon as they conveniently could, without mach regard to objictive, and bolred for safety....
The first wireless message they „received as they were crossing the Channel, although not encourag- ing for the Z-ppelin crew, will be interesting to British readers. It was as follows:-
"Zeppelin trainingsbip broken loose with nobody aboard, and being carried away by wind."
No farther news bas bean received of this airship in France. -Reater.
