Australia and The
Metric System. Mr. W. M. Hughes, the Prime Minister of Australis, recently stated that he favoured the intro- -dnotion of the matris system of "weight" and messures and decimal
coinage, bat felt that it would_be_ useless to make the change until Great Britain led the way.

Dealings in Cotton. Our representative on the Man- chefter Royal Exchange. says the Times of September 15, writes that the Control Board, at its meeting, yesterday, had under reviews complete scheme for the reopening of the futures market. The scheme now awaits the approval of the Board of Trade, which is likely to be given next week. It is anderstood that, beginning with October 1, dealings in fatares will be allow- ed, practically without drastic limitation, in all months from next January to next August. The basis will be Good Middling, instead of Middling, a change which will facilitate business by modifying the disparity that so often exists between the present basis and the scinal grade of cot- ton that a boyer wants, Tenders are not to be allowed. This pro spective restriction ie meeting with some criticism on the Ex change. It is raid that it may "encourage speculation, but it is explained that if this should be the effect the advantage will be with the bears rather than with the balls in other words, it will tend to deprees rather than to zaize prices.
