It is reported that the Nippon Yusea Kaisha contemplates withrawing the extra atramers on the American service. The" reang seems to be the decreased shipments on the retum voyage, and that if the extra service is to be maintained, the charter of the vessels used has to be renowed at high rates. The extra steamers were chartered last year or at [the beginning of this year at about Y17 per ton. Though the charter market has recently nevertheless, no less than Y27. It declined, the present rate is,
is thought it will be upremuner- ative to keep up the extra service with steamers chartered at such a high rate; hence, the proposal for discontinuance of the service. It is expected that on the of the charter termination contracts for the extra steamers at the end of this year, they will be either totally withdrawn or reduced in number.
Formosan Freights.
Hitherto the freight on the free or unsubsidised service between Yokohama and Takas has been about double that for the sub- |sidis, d service between Kobe and Keelung. As a result of this discrepancy in freight rates the advance in the price of com- modities in the southern part of Formosa has been far greater than in the northern part, and

the southera community appealed to the Government General to lower the freight for the unsub. Bicised service. On the "other hand, the Nippon Yusen Kaisha. approached the authorities with a request to raise the subsidised freight. The steamship company has eventually carried its point, and decided almost to double the rates on fertiliser, beancake, etc. on the outward voyage. and to raiso. by about 41 per cent, the charges for rice, sugar, tea etc. Од
on the retura voyage. The fa- creased rates ara to become Fri, 30th Nov. st d'light, operative from December let Fri, 30th Nov, at noon, next. Tho freight for the unsub- Sun.. 2nd Dec at 7 a.m. sidised steamers is also to be Fri.. 7th Dec, at 3 p.m. raised.

The Camille Rickmers Sate at Norfolk.
The S.S, Camille Richmers, one of the first of the German vessels seized at this part upon the out- break of war between the United States and Germany to be placed
in commissión, has arrived safely. ". at Norfolk, Virginia, says the Manila Daily Bulletin" of Nov- ember 21, after having passed the danger zone of the Mediterranean and after having negotiated the Atlantic crossing without in-. cident. News of the safe arrival of the ship in the United States was receivad in an official mes. sage to the governor general yesterday, and will relieve the anxiety of a number of Manila- families, representatives of which were members of the crew of the Vossel. The Camille, Rickmers left Manila 'several months ago; proceeding to Singapore, where she loaded a cargo of rice in ad- dition to coal and supplies for the destroyer flotilla which left the islands for Atlantic service short, ly after her departure. She accompanied the five destroyers through the Suez, and then left them to proceed on the last leg of her journey alone. It is pre- sumed bare that the federal shipping board will assign her to duty in the trans Atlantic trade, although the insular authorities, particularly the purchasing agent, have been active in an attempt to make arrangements, whershy she might be permitted to bring out a carmo of much- needed supplies for the governë ment from New York, by way of the Suez canal. Nothing definite "as to her futura, moraments: however, is known ka? k
