Japan and Rubber. According to the Japanese papers Japanese enterprises in the South Seas are making stready progress. As regards rubber plantations, recently the Mitsubishi Company acquired the lease of 1,500 acres in North: Borneo and Mr. Kulbara has also obtained a lease of 2,810 acres. Mr. Kuhara is also reported to have applied for 21,000 acres in North Bornes. In Sarawak, the Suzuki Shoten, of Kobe, has already scquired two estates- one of 2,000 acres and soother öf" |1,000 acres. Messrs. Endo Takac. Urabe Jofu, and others are now engaged in the promotion of a rubber-manutacturing company, named the Daito Gomei Kaisha, in British Borneo, with a capital of Y-5,00,000. Turning to the sugar industry it will be observed that the Shokusan Seizo Kaisha has already been incorportated and its sister concern, the Nanyo Sangyo Kaisha, is now engaged in buying up small sugar mills in Dutch Borneo. The establish- ment of a sugar company in Sumatra with & capital of. Y. 6,000,000, to be called the Nanyo Seito Kaisha, is now in course of promotios. A number of Japanese are also carrying on petroleum, mining and other enterprises in British and Dutch Borneo.

According to reports of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Alexandria General Produce As- sociation for August,the weather has been quite favourable for the Egyptian cotton crop and the water supply ample, Some slight attacks of cotton worm have boen reported from Upper Egypt, the worms being the remnants of the escaped destruction. The cotton in Lower Egyptshowed a greater infection by Gelechia than in the previous year up to the end of the first 10 days of August, but the rate of increase in the locality Wa slower during the following 15 days, so that, by the 25th the infection by this past was actually 5 per cent. lower than at the same period last year. In Middle Egypt the increase has been more rapid and the percentage of in- fection is double what it was at "the same period In 1916. The same remaks apply to Upper Egypt, where the infestation is nearly double that of last year at the same time. In Upper Egypt first pickings have commenced in most of the early lands and will be general in a few days, The the crop actual condition
