A Successful British Operation.
London, October 31. Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig reports:successful uperawon with hmited objectives was carried out this morn ing, between the Ypros-Loulers railway and the Posicappelle- Westroosebeke' road, when important progress was made despite the marshy ground on the bulk of the front, heavy. rem áno galés making contnunication with the troops cz- tremely dificult. The Canadians on the right, despite tierce. opposition, gamed all their objectives on the main ridge and feached the outskirts of Passchendaele. Fighting was sever. ' ost on the spur westward of the village where ave counter- attacks were beaten off Captured machine-guns were used with affect in the repulsing of these attacks. The going was particularly bad on the left of the attack, flooded streams intercepting the low-lying ground. None the less the Naval and Luodon Territorial battalions captured a number of lorified farms and strong points after heavy ghung. The Gloucesters made a successful raid south-eastward of Gavrelle, while the Belgians had a successful raid southwardi of Dixnude and took 19 prisoners.

Altogether the day has been satisfactory. We have substantially bitten into the shrinking piece of ridge left in enemy possession. There has never, beck a series of operations more co-ordinated to secure a delinite end than the present progressive battles in Flander the important strategic fruits of which are being continually gathered in.
