Originally enlisting at the age of 13, he served 15 years in the Rɔya]| Welch Fusiliers. At the age of 52 he volunteered for service in the South African War, and wae wounded in the bead and leg. Last year, as an object-lesson to shirkers, he volunteered for the Royal Defence Corps, and served until his woande troubled him. He has now been called upon to rejzin.

Milk and Horses.

The Mitk (Beturns) Order, dated July 31, made by the Foo1 Controller, under Regulation 2G of the Defence of the Realm Regulations, quires that all per- sona engaged in the production, purchner, sale, distribution, tran eport, storage of any milk, shail farmish particulara as. to their businesses as may from time to time be specified by or on behalf of the Food Controller and shall verify the same in such manner as he may direct. The Ministry of Food states, in reply to quee- tions about the form in which records of ratione supplied to horses are to be kept, that the only figures required are thoss which show the number of hurees! kept, the rasions they are entitled; to, and the total amount of each cereal consumed. These recorde must be produced for the inspec tion of an officer of police or any other person authorised by the Food Controller.

Grant of £1,000 by the Rhodes Trustees.

The Rhodes Trustees have in- formed the authorities at Oxford that they have decided to make agrant of £1,000 towards the fand which is being raised fo the endowment of a Permanent Professorship of Forestry in the university. This fund, which, was originally started by the presset professor, Sir William Sohlich, beginning with a hand- some donation by himself and his former popile, bad already amounted to nearly £4,500. The trustee of the Gaiversity Endowment Fand have also ex- pressed abair willingness to allow the payment of £250 per annum, which they have hitherto made towards the payment of sa assistant professor, to be carried this year to the same fand, which will now therefore stand at some- thing over £5,000
