Reported American Embargo on Japanese Silky

For several days past there, have been rumours of the U.S." | Government extending the list of the commodities the export of which requires special permission from the American authorities It is now reported that the United States will prohibit the import of Japanese raw silk and habuiae. According to the "Jiji," a leading firm in Osata has received a telegram stating that it is rum- oured the U.S. Government is taking steps to interdict the importation of Japanese raw silk and habutae, and that, therefore, due precautions should be exercised in this connection. If this report is true, it will of course produce a ve y serious effect on Japan's export trade, for silk is the most important of the com- modities exported from this country, and moreover, America is the largest customer for that article. The report, however, has not yet been conarmed.

Yarn Panic in Osaka,-

The Osika Cotton Yarn Ex- change suffered a heavy slump last week after a long continuance of heavy advances. On August 28 quotations closed as follows:-

That quotations should fall by no less than Y30 in a single day... is very exceptional, remarks the "Japan Chronicle." The prices on August 28 show a decline of no less than Y200 compared with the highest quotations reached only a fortnight ago. There seem to be no special reasons T.sponsible for the drop, which is evidently due to the collapse of the artificial influences which caused the extraordinary boom, As a matter of fact, there is nothing vry extraordinary in quotations falling as the present cost of one bale of cotton yarn is not more than Y220 Interest now centres, not on the future curse of quotations, but on the effect which the precipitous drop wil have on the merchants cncerned
