Unmarried Mothers.
At a conference of the position fof unmarried mothers at the National Baby Week Exhibition, Mre. Creighton said that although they desired the unmarried woman to receive such help na would enable her to earn her own | living, they did not want to make things easier for the unmarried than the married. She would like to see the establishment of farm colonies where the mother⠀⠀ could go with her child. It had been found that the ranks of pro- stitutes were largely filled by girls with their first babier, driven to earn their living on the streets by lack of means. Judge Neil (U.S.A.) remarked that the first step must be to make the working-class married woman' home condition so ressonable that women would prefer to be married rather than unmarried mothers. Mies Maud Boyden "contended. that the term "illegitimate should cease to be applied to children both in law and custom.

A telegram dated Sept. 6 from the Kasis Lumpur correspondent? of the Singapore Frea Preas stulan:With a view to encourag. ing the planting of foodstuffs and increasing the loos! production of food; the F. M. 8 Government has approved the following measures:All restrictions with regard to planting tapioca and other foodstuff on alienated land are suspended. All land, und exclusively for growing vegał ables, bananas and pineapples to be given rent free for the next five year. This applice also to estates. The restrictions on the growing of foodstuffe on mining land have been suspended for fire year. The restrictions on plant. ing hill padi are suspended. Portions of the reserves along the railway line will be let for plant- ing staff.
Captain E: W. Haswell. Many of Capt. E. W. Hanwell's old friends will be sorry to leszn that the news of his death was re- ceived at Tokyo on the 6th inst. For forty years he sailed from Japan. Capt. Haswell retired ten years ago. He came to Japan as chief officer of the lighthonge tender Thebor, and shortly after- wards joined the Miten Biabi 8. 8. Co. After the N.Y.K. Co. was formed Capt. Haswell, was appointed captain of one of their steamers and be remained in their employ until he retired.. He was always a great favourite with the Shanghai public, who loved to travel in his steamer to the Land of the Rising Sao. Bis last command was the Nikko Mara. He joined her shortly after she was launched in 1902 and be remained in her until he retired in 1907. She was one of the popular besty running to Australis, He was a thorough gentleman of a very genial nature and a universal favourite.
