Gifts to an Official.
At the Central Criminal Court, before Me.Justice Lawrence, Ingis Prechner, 34, manufacturer, on bail, pleaded guilty to two counte in an indictment charging him with giving a gilt to Mr. Wake- ford, an official of the Royal Army Clothing Departments. Mr. Justica Lawrence fined the de- fendant £590. Mr. Travers Hamphreys, appearing with Mr. Cecil Whiteley for the Director of Public Prosecutions, mid the defendant was managing director of the Parringdon Manufacturing. and Sapply Company (Limited)," who had contracts with the Royal Army Clothing Department. Mr. Wake- ford was an assistant to the chief investigating officer of the depart ment, and had nothing to do with the giving out of contracts or the inspection of goods. In October the defendant "while. lapching. with Mr. Wakeford gave him #20. Mr. Wakeford at once reported Į the matter to the authorities and handed them the money. On another occasion the defendant gave Mr. Wakeford £25, The matter was again reported and the money handed over to the suthorities. In this case the prosecution recognized that the money was not giren by the défendant as a bribe. There was anggestion that it was paid for passing or accepting

Gill, K O., who, with Mr. Huntly Jenkins, appeared for the defendant, said that no- person bad been bribed and no work had been done which was not absolutely in accordance with the terms of the contract, Mr. Justice Lawrence said be regard- ed osses of corruption as extreme- ly grave.
