British Tax'oa Foreign Ships. A conference of Scandinavian shipowners recently had under discussion the question of the British tax on Foreign ships trading with Great Britain. It was emphasised that this tax, if it become effective, would cause « enormous líss to shipowners, and might even make international commerce between certain coun- tries impossible. A resolution was subsequently adeptai unaois mously authorising the committee of the conference to take steps to prevent the payment of any tax on ships in other countries than those to which they belonged. How a Wilson Liner' was Sunk.
The story of the sinking of the Wilson liner. Cito has been told by Mr. George Chapman, chief officer of the vessel. The Cito. lest Hull for Rotterdam on May 12, and on May 17 Mr. (hapman was awakened by gun-fire. On going on deck he found that ther were in a dense fog and there was an enemy destroyer on each quarter, less than a hundred yards | di-tant, abelling the ship. “I went to the boat deck, and found. the port boat had been shotawaY. I ordered two men to stand by the starboard boat; and then tried to get forward, but the way Was blocked by wreckage. There were also several injured or dead men lying on deck. The enemy vessels continued to fire almost- Tat point blank range, and the ship was rapidly sinking. The captain called from the bridge for me to get a boat away, and having got nine of the crew into the boat we just managed to get clear when the ship turned over on to her side, and rank. One destroyer „fired at her up to the last. When the boat got clear of the ship we narrowly escaped being rammed by one of the destroyers, Wa cruised about in the vicinity for three hours, but did not see or hear anything of the remainder of the crew. Later we were picked up by a drifter. The behaviour of the crew was splendid under most trying conditions."
·Shipbuilding in the U.S. The Submarine Boat Corpor- ation is the shipbuilding concern which leased i nd at Port Nework Terminal on Newark Bay for the construction of steel ocean-going vessels. This became known last we k, when the c mpany, leased 29.99 more acres in ad- dition to the 87.80 acres it leased ...; several weeks ago. Both leases are conditional upon the -com- pany receiving a contract from the Government. Early in the war the Submarine Boat Cor- porat on, under the name of the Elco Boat Company, filled' an order for 55 submarine ch-sers at Bayonne and Montreal, and has built submarines in New En: land About three miles to the rorth of Port Newark, on the Kearny side. "of the Passaic · River, the Foundation Company of Broad- way, New York, says the New York Journal of Commerce," has a force of about 200 men building the ways on which wooden anips are to be built for the Govern- ment. Three of the proposed twelve ways are compl tad, an-* other is nearing completion, and two other+ are being rushed as speedily as poss ble The ways. are on property recently acquired by Henry Ford, and while it is said that he is not interested in the sh pbuilding company he has lent the property to the Gováza- meit. The ways" are ab int 34 feet wide, 225 feet long, and about 15 feet in height at the highest point. It is reported that the first phip will be completed by Aurast LG O
