A Big Purchase of Hulls. There has lately been observ~. shipowners t seek after bigger able a new tendency among Köbe

vessels. This --- inclination is especially shown by the Katauda Kisen Kaisha, which has bought

a cargo-boat of 12,4 00 tons dead- weight, now building at the Asano Dockyards, for ¥8,410,000, or about 70 per ton. This price is comparatively low compared with the ruling quot». ations of over Y8 0. The steamer.. is to be delivered in January next. An enormous purchase of bulls. Las also been made in the name of Mr. Katsuda Giujiro, proprietor of the Katsuda Kisen Kaisha, The Osaka Ironworks is building. seven steamers-two of 5,000 tops and five of 10,000 tons-to the order of the Nippon Kisen. Kaisha, run by the Kuhara family, of Osaka. There have been many offers to buy these Tassels but the Nippon Kisan Kaisha hope to tell all of them to one buyer. The desired pur- chaser has now appeared in Mr. Katsuda, who has contracted to buy all saven steamers, aggregate ing 6 1,000 tons for Y42,000,000, or at the rate of Y70 per ton, and has deposited bargain-money amounting to Y8,400,000 with the sellers. The vessels are to be finished between June and December next year. This is, of course, the largest transaction. ever concluded in hulls in this country. As this enormous purchase is made in the name of Mr. Katsuda, himself a very. prosperous shipowner, it is naturally believed that the newly- acquire 1 vessels are intended for his own busines. In some quarters, however, it is rumoured that behind the transaction is the Nippon Yusen Kaisha, which," according to a rumour on the Stock Exchange, contemplates increasing is capital-"Japan Chronicle")

The Shipping Frenzy. On August 15 the "Japan Chronicle reported as a record for the North American service. the chartering of a ship at Y. 40. per ton. Next day the same Kobe" paper recorded a new rate, Y.. 43.50 for the Taiyu Maru, 8,800 tons, chartered to Measts, Masuda & Co.. Thus the charter rate is
