being an alien enemy and having made, a false statement to they aliens' officer. `An aliens' officer stated that on the 30th April he examined the accused, along with the crew of as American vessel, which had arrived at the Liver pool Docks The accused had boon engaged as a fireman on board. He informed witness that he was a Russian subject, having been born in Russia, of Russian parents, and be produced, a Con- sular certificate, which he said, he had obtained in Rotterdam, That document was now in the possession of the Russian Consul General in London for inquiries. As a result of further inquiries, witness found that Lapinski Ład been in Germany for some years. Ha informed witness that he had entered Dortmund, Westphalia, ten days before the ou break of war, and had remained there for some time working in a coal mine. Asked the reason why he had left Germany, he said that owing to the scarcity of food he got tired and left for Holland. The matter was communicated to the Super intendent. Aliens' Officer and, witness being very suspicious about the accused, he was ordered to be taken off the ship ard detained. The accused theough the medium of an interpreter, now admitted the "correctaess of the. witness statement, Detective. Botcher, supplementing the pre- vious, witness' statement, said the accused, when interrogated, in- formed witnees that he was 31 years of age; that he was a single man, and had never attended I school. The passports he had in his possession he had taken to the Russian Consulate, and they had been detained there. The document in question, added wit ness, was only a declaration stat-- ug that he had told the Consul n Rotterdam that he was a Russian, subject. The Stipen- diary: How did he get to R.tterdam? Witness-He stated to him that he could speak Russian and a little English. Ho denied being able to speak any German. He had. he said, orig- inally worked at home as a farm
