without question, in the Royal Navy as a lieutenant-commander and has won the D.S.O. in the present war, the other, like Cap- tain Riepenhausen, had to cease sailing his merchant-ship because his parents were notBrit sh born." There was not even taint of Germanism and the family weswell known as English and vouched for fully.

Shipbulding at High Pressure.

All this year, says the May "Compendium." the efforts of the shipyards and of the Shipping Controller haye been concentrated on the task of pushing on the Government standard and other mercantile vessels which are in hand. These efforts are meeting. with success, and the output of merchant tonnage is steadily" increasing but it has only been achieved by the most careful" arrangements and the combined co-operation of all concerned- the Admiralty, the shi:yard officials and workers, the iron and steel producers, the marine engine-makers-and these in turn have meant an insistent rail for raw and finished materials, which are now, by all accounts, coming forward satisfactorily. Iron ore is being mined at home and imported from Spain on a larger scale. the ironmasters. have lighted additional furn- Ances, and the output of steel has been steadily increased. All the reports from the iron and steel centres agree that supplies of ship plates and angles, as well as forgings and castings, are now more in keeping with the demand than they were last year. The assembling and allocation of skilled and unskilled labour to the different yards has been no easy task, but it has been accom- plished by dit of organisation, acd 10-day there are even women doing useful work in our ship- raids. The result is seen in the launching, fitting out, and com- pletion of merchant ships, of which the world hears nothing.

Compensation for Widows of Merchant Seamen. The notification which was

of the Navy to the effect that increased allowance will be paid to widows of merchant service officers who have been lost at sea whilst their vessels were оп Admiralty charter, recalls the persistent efforts of the Mercantile Marine Service Association ia this matter. This association sp proached the Admiralty many months ago, pointing out the inadequacy of the present all- owances owing to the daily increasing cost of living, and also drawing attention to the fact that the limitation of the number of children to four imposed grest hardships upon those brave wo- men who were left with age families to support. The follow- ing letter, recently forwarded to the secretary by the gratefál widow of a lata member, speats eloquently of all that the OCI- stion bas done am, indeed, thankful for your letter of the 5th instant containing the good news that the Government have agreed to increase the allowances for all children.
