THE WESTERN OFFENSIVE.

Unsuccessful Enemy Attacks.

London, Aug. 2.

Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig reports: The enemy in the morning and afternoon violently, but unsuccessfully. attempted to recover the ground northeast of Ypres. Strong forces repeatedly attacked, regardless of the increas- ing severity of their losses, the positions between the fpres- Roulers Railway and St. Julien. We in every case broke up and dispersed the advancing lines. We raided north-west- ward of Gougeaucourt and inflicted many casualties,

Enemy Seriously Perturbed.

London, Aug, 2 Reuter's correspondent at Headquarters says semi-witry weather prevails, a low leaden sky with a dense, drizzle imposing the very maximum difficulties upon the uperations. but notwithstanding there has been much severe fighting during the past twenty-four hour. The Genuans are manifestly seriously perturbed at our gaining so much high ground slug Pillem Ridge. The enemy launched several desperate counter-attacks and although these were repeatedly checked by our intense artillery fire yet im places they reached the stage of hand-to-hand fighting of ferocious character." The Huns clearly are throwing in their best Staratroopen to try to relieve the situation.

Beuter's Headquarters correspondent telegraphing în the afternoon, filling in details of Tuesday's battle, says: Our infantry waves passed in the dark and did not detect parties of Germans crouching in shell holes; consequently, they suffered from back sniping. He declares the Germans often deliberately shut the wounded. The enemy unsuccess- fully resorted

the

device f wiring shell holes. The fighting was stiffest at Hollebeke, where, machine guns advantageously placed proved our greatest obstacle. The Germans declined to emerge from their con crete dugouts; consequently, their casualties were extremely heavy. The correspondent meations that the enemy fre- quently and determinedly counter-attacked unsuccessfully at Labasse Ville, which is a very definite stepping stone to Lille. The correspondent instances a numõet of splendid feats by our airmen, who fought as low as two hundred feet -in consequence of the lowness of the clouds. He also pays a tribute to the wonderful efficiency of the medical organisation.
