BITTER STRUGGLES ON WESTERN FRONT.

London, Aug 1.

Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig reporta: Rain has fallen all day long. Our line has been advanced slightly in the neighbourhood of the Zilleboke-Zandvoorde road. The French have gained further ground on the east bank of the Yser Canal. Strong forces of the enemy heavily counter attacked our new positions eastward and north-eastward of Ypres between Westhoek and St. Julien After resisting repeated attempts we were compelied, after stubborn fight- ing, to withdraw from St. Julien Fighting is particularly fierce for Westhoek and we now hold the western outskirts." The enemy in the afternoon re-attacked in the neighbour hood of the Ipres-Roulers railway and entered our advanced positions on a narrow front. Fighting is proceeding.

The British took prisoner yesterday over five thousand including ninety-five officers. They also captured a few guns, and a number of machine guns and trench mortars.

Despite the weather yesterday our aeroplanes were in. contact with the advancing infantry all day long. They sue- cessful. bombed and machine-gunned the enemy's aeroplanes, transport and infantry. Few enemy machines attempted to fy. We brought down six. Three of ours are missing..

We took prisoner in July including yesterday's capturos to six in the evening 4,069 of whom eighty-five are officers. To also took eight field guns, £fty-three machine guns and thirty-two trench mortars.

MR, HENDERSON EXPLAINS HIS PARIS VISIT.

London, Aug. 2.

In the House of Commons, Mr. Henderson said the delegates did not go to Paris to discuss the war situation but to examine with the whole French Socialist Party and · the Russian Delegates a new invitation to the International Conference issued by the Dutch Scandinavian Committee, also to discuss a proposal for an inter-Allied Conference. The Government approved of the latter, Mr. Henderson twitted the members on their belated discovery that membership of the War Cabinet and the Secretaryship of the Labour Party were absolutely irreconcilable. He deemed it was of the highest importance that he should join the sub-commit- Lec going to Paris when he realised that Mr. Ramsay Mac- donald was going in order to keep Mr. Macdonald right. He declared he had done what he conceived to be his duty cot only in the interests of his party but of the country.
