HOSPITAL SHIP
TORPEDORD
Stories by Survivors of the Dover Castle.
Details of the attack upon the hospital ship Dover Castle (tor pedoed without warning in the Mediterranean) whilst carrying orer Bix hundred wounded- Holdiers, wars scoured recently from a few of the survivors who" have reached home.
"A load explosion occurred in ths after part of the ship... It fairly knocked me off my feet," -aid a survivor, "and it was rome time before I realised what had happened, for I was quita dased. There was a tremendous Sorush of water, particularly in the We were firemen's quarters. stock just below the water-line, and for some time it seemed as if we should see the vessel dis-
sppear under our feet,
**But we soon got right ngaîn, and; thanks to our officers, the " work of rescuing the wounded was soon in full swing. We had a terrible task, running about. get the Boldiers to

the lifeboats: ---- dodging here and there to help a poor fellow whose wounds prevented him from helping himself.
The firemen suffered very badly. The men on watch weŻO. trapped like rata in's trap. Not only were they injured by broken wood and ironwork, but they caught the fall force of the tremendous inrash of ́ water, and the six men who were killed ar drowned were all on the' same watch."
When all the soldiers and the remainder of the crew had taken to the boats, it appeared probable that the vessel would not sink alter all. Although deep in the water she began to ride easily and the captain (Commander Wilber- ford) decided to return to the Birioken ship, in the hope that tugs would soon arrive and take her to port. His call for volunteers was eagerly answered, and a bostload of officers and crew re- turned to the Dover Castle, but, blore the tags arrived the sub- marine had returned.
Witboat much ado the second Σε dich ged, torpedo was caught the hospital ship, no. fat from the stam sad cais filiusi - the Dove: Osatie.
