Hundreds Killed Ing Tuânel.
French Front, June 3.—Sixteen. Tain attempts have been mita by the Germans, since May 20 to recepture the Moroavilliers range of hills, which run eastward from Rbeims. Morenvillers, the Car- nillet, the Carque, the Teton, sad Mont Haut have been attacked slmost daily, with the only result of the addition of thousands to the lists of German killed and wounded.
Specially selected battalions of German infantry, who had under- gone intensive training and" rehearsal, were sent forward to the last attack on the night of May 30, but the French power of resistacos was too great, and they lost terribly. The first two lines advancing towards the French irenches fell almost to a man before they were half way across the open.

Some of their men in succeed. ing waves secured possession of portione of French trenches, bat a vigorous counter-attack drova them out, except from one or two sections, where they held firmly till daybreak, until the French got among them with the bayonet. and killed every man. The ground between the two linee is now thickly covered with German bodise, while othere sprawl across the wire entanglements.
The German works on Mont Cornillet, whence they were fare ed out by the French on May 20, abow that they attached prime imperiance to holding the posi- tion, which dominates most of the ground in the vicinity. On the northern slope of the hill they bad excavated an extensive ionnel having three erits, and with sofficient room to accommodate three battalione with ten days' sup- plies and marge munition dampe. Near the crest above the tandel they had constructed deep shel- tere, machine gan positions, and pits for riflemen and grenadiers.
When the French opened their Offensive on April 17, they were ignorant of the existence of this tunnel, and after they had gained the Cornillet crest sad continued to advance to the other side, the German occupants came out be hind them and poured volleys of rifle and machine gun bullets into their backs.
The French did not make the same mistake when they renewed their attack on May 20. They, opened with terrific artillery" bombardment from guns of the biggest calibre, and also used gaa shella. The infantry then went over and soon gained the crest and Dorthern alopes of the Cor aillet, where they awaited the German counter-attack from the tanzel.
The Germans, however, did not sortie as expected. A German officer was captured near the crest while shouting down one of the ventilating shafts of the tannel. He seemed as surprised as the French at the lack of German reaction. A reconnaissance of ope of the tunnel éxite brought to light the fact that the whole garrison were the victims of French gai and other shells.
The occupante comprised aix companies of the 478th - German infantry regiment, with, twa majors, two companies of machine gunners,two sections of engineers, ambulance anit, and telegraph section, besides several artillery observation officers. The loss of their observation posts on these bille has since been greatly felt by the German artillery, whose fire seems to have become wild and uncertain.
