Profits in- Tonnage.
Some idea of the enormous profits obtained from the sale of ships in Japan is afforded by the case of Mr. Itaya, President of the Itaya Steamship Company of Kobe, who recently disposed of s vessel to an Italian purchaser for Y3,500,000. Mr. Itays bought the "Kurohime Maru," 6,300 tons deadweight, early in 1910, She was owned by a British firm, her name at that time being Hillglade and she was on the service between England and Japan. Ehe was built at Glasgow twelve years ago and Mr. Itays pald Y.305,000 for her, which priče was deemed quite a good one for a cargo vessel of her size prior to the outbreak of the war. She was chartered by an Allied firm soon after the war broke out and Mr. Itaya has already earned more than be paid when he purchased her.
