Mr. W. C. Anderson, M.P., who has been pressing on successive Governments during the warto take over the shipping, said. recently that as far back as February, 1916, they asked the Government to nationalise ship-f ping, or failing that to deal with freight. It was predicted that owing to the circumstances freight would rise. That was 'precisely what had happened. The reply was given," The suggestion is Utopian and revolting and can not be entertained." He had urged that the managers of the companies should be regarded as public, servants during the war and generously paid for their services, and made unable to take advantage of the sin ular change of conditions Where, freight remained uncontrolled the shipping companies had am- assed fortunes and had navizated. the excess profits minefields reřy. successfully. These huge for tunes had been quoted by the workers, and had 'caused dis- satisfaction. One thing he hoped the Government would do, and that was to look after the con- (ditions cf employment of the merchant seamen, whose courage in face of danger and death was beyond praise. Now that ex-. cessive shipping profits were ta be taken over he intended rais ing in Parliament the question of the seamen to see that they. got the best possible conditions.

the days of Crecy and Agincourt, he adied, there wie no sugar, and they got along very well without it. (Laughter.)—Mr. Houston asked the Prizlia- mentary Secretary to the Shipp- jeg Contro.ler whether, in estimating the available tonnage for the needs of the nation. he
