SHIPPING NEWS.
Kėbe Shipbuilding.
An Osaka journal reports that a freight steamer of 10,300 tone" gross register, which was laid down at the Kawasaki Dockyard, Kobe, and sold while on the stocks to a British firm, was | launched recently. The keels of six other steamers have been laid at the Dockyard and the vessels will be launched by the end of the year.
Saving Steel In Shipbullding.
It is interesting in connection with the United States big ship- building push to learn that in mercantile shipbuilding, before she declared war, no fewer than 140 ships were ordered on the Isherwood system of construction. They represent a deadweight carrying capacity of 1,344,000, and it is estimated that: the raving in steel by adopting this system is 40,000 tons. Within the last week or so, says the “Journal of Commerce” Mr. J. W. | Isherwood, the patentee of the system, has received further requests to proceed to the States in connection with the construc tion of standard ships; and Japan, which is taking up the same ides, |will afterwards be visited by Mr.
Isherwood at the request of ship-.. builders in that country. It is noteworthy that 700 ship have been built, or are under construc- - tion, on this system despite the fact it was only introduced a little over eight years ago, and it claims, we believe, 95 per cent. of the oil tank vessels now being built throughout the world. Mr. Isherwood, who is comparatively a young man, was formerly a. member of the technical staff of Lloyd's. Of considerable import- ance is the fact that out of a total of 672 ships which have been built on the Isherwood system," and which represent a total deadweight carrying capacity of 5,203,000 tons. the enormous amount of 150,000 tons of steel has been saved, as against what would have been required for the construction of the ship) in the ordinary way. It is estimated by a well-known navel architect that if the Government is lively t> give out contracts for 200 ships by adopting the Isherwood system 34,000 tons of steel could be saved.

U. 5. and Interned Enemy Ships. Recent Washington advices state that a further survey of the seized German and Austrian ships shows that 71 will be ready for sea within a few months. Daly, the discovery of concealed damages will delay the work beyond that time given. The Shipping Board estimates that 535,722 Rross tons of shipping can be placed at the disposal of the Allies to supplement the food transportation if the Administrā tion determines to make use of
In less than 8 month difficulties have been overcome which it was feared might have rendered the ships useless for a very long time. The smaller vessels will be ready for sea in less than four months. Only the great liners like the Vaterland and Amerika will re- quire more time. The steamers Clara Mennig and Portonia have already been commissioned, the former to the Italian and the latter to the French Govern- ment for one voyage. "The placing of these vessels at the disposal of the French and Italians does not ind.cate a policy as to the disposition of interned |ships," said the Obsirman of the Shipping Board. "They have been loaned to these Govern- ments for one voyage. This is not a part of the programme which the Shipping Board is working out for recommendatiɔn as to the use of the interned vessels. It is simply a step taken to meet an immediate need” Repair work will centre an cargo carriers for the present, and the larger, passenger ships will be turned over to the Navy Depart- ment for training ships for recruits. "It is possible," Mr. Denman said, "that they will be converted into transports Inter if military expeditions are sent to Europe.
