MUNITION MATTERS.

London, June 28.

Dr. Addison, in his review of the work of the Ministry of Munitions, said negotiations wore now proceeding with a view to enabling the United States to place its resources more readily and more effectively at the Allies' disposal and for promoting economy in purchase. The Imperial Munitions Board was now the greatest business organisation in Canada employing over 200,000 workers.

Dr. Addison stated that Britain's output of steel, which was seven million tons before the war, was now ten million tons and he hoped it would be twelve millions by the end of 1918. He mentioned that stool plates in Britain cost less than half of what they ocet in merios and shell steel 80 per cent. loss. We were now po dabing all the tungsten weed besides supplying much to the Allies.

The Premier has accepted a number of Chang Fan's de mands, including the reorganization of the Cabinet with the reduction of powers of the President; the re-drafting of the Constitution and the re-election of Parliament with a reduced membership. Consequently the Commanding Generals at Chihli, Shangtung, Féngton and Honan have agreed to withdraw their troops and cancel the declarations of independence.

OBITUARY.

The death is announced of Sir George Birdwood, M.D. (Edin.), LO.IL., 0.8.1, etc., who died suddenly of heart failure.

The late Sir George Birdwood was born in Bombay in 1830, his father being General Christopher Birdwood. Bir George joined, the Bombay. Medical. Staff in 1664, served in the Persian Expedition of 1866-57, took a most prominent part in the public life of Bombay and in all the international exhibitions in London, Paris and elsewhere since 1851. It was he who founded Primrose Day. He was author of many works.]
