GREAT SPEECH BY GENERAL BOTHA.
Capetown, June 25.
Speaking at Robertson, Cape Colony, General Botha re gretted that the Provincial Council elections were being fought on political lines. They should have remained outside party polities but unfortunately politics had been dragged into many matters where they should never have been, even intö rative affairs. He would be a coward and a faithless leader if he allowed his people to sink into the mine without attempting to rescue them. The future of South Africa depended upon the co-operation of the two white races but there could not and must not be two streams in South Africa: (Prolonged cacers). Now they had heard of Republican pro- paganda. Did the people want to cut adrift? Why did they raise these matters under present difficulties ?
Would it not have been far more honest to have said at Vereeniging that they desired to create a new republic as soon as possible General Botha proceeded to point out that the Nationalists' programme and principles specifically "recognised Clause 4 of the Act of Union concerning the Union's relations towards the United Kingdom as resting on the bona Sdes of the two nations. Let miyone tell him, General Botha exclaimed, where their rights had been inter- fered with or curtailed and what was the reason of this epublican propaganda? The fact was that they in South Africa had the greatest possible liberties and as much fros dom as could be obtainable under any republican system.
[The conclusion of the speech will be found in the new telegrams.-Ed. "H.K.T."]
