One of his greatest sabieraments, the dockyard extension at Devonport, took ten years in the making. and cost four-and-a-half milions. He also built eight miles of the Manchester Ship Canal, and was knighted after i's opening in 1895.
Norway Selling Her Ships
According to the "Tidens Tagn" (Christiania) Norwe, ian shipowners having during the past few weeks so'd most of the ships now being built in American wharves. During March, ships were sold for some 200 million Froner, and during the past few few weeks more than 200,000 tors have been bou ht by Americans. It is assumed that following the United States entry into the war, still more bottoms will be sold. In A leading article, the Norwegian “Dagbladet demands that the Norwegian merchant fleet be provided with guns, and points out that the arming of Norwegian merchantmen is quite in accord. ancs with the principles of neutrality.
Deep Water at Panama. Mr. Linden Bates, a well- known Amer can engineer, bas again submitted plans to the Panama Government for the reclamation of a large tract of land zear the city of Panama. The Government, how- ever. considers the proposals unacceptable in their present form, which really means the terms, as the conditions impos, d taxation both on the inhabitants and the labour employed, al- though the amount taken from the latter wou'd be set aside to purchase reclaimed land for them. Although the project has been "turned down," it is.thought that its re-ventilation might lead to 8 acceptable offer later. Award of Lloyd's Silver Medal.
