Shocking Enemy Treatment...
of an Arab Seaman. An Arab seamar, a former member of the crew of the Sunderland steamer May Scott, whose name is Salem Abuszed arrived at South Shields recently from Ruhleben Camp, where he had been a prisoner of war since Augúst, 1914. Abuszed states that the German author- lities marked out the col ured class:s for special ill-favour aed ill-treatment. This unfortunate seaman was given a disagreesb'e task, which is among he forbid. den things in his religion as a following of Mahomet. He explained to the German tasi- ma ter the reasons why be could not perform it. In spite of this the, German officer struck. Abue- zed and confioed him in a prison cage, in which he could only stand upright and was unable to turn round. Abuszed was con- demced to this atrocious form of durance for 72 hours and fed on one slice of black bread per day.
Future of Motor Ships. The East Asiatic Company, of Copenhagen, h's apparently no doubt as to the future of motor ships as commerce carriers, as it has row under construction or on order no fewer than twenty of these vessels. In order to prrcare the necessary capital for meeting the cost of this file-t, the company has been gradually getting rid of its interests in otherundertakings. In 19 5 a new steamship com- pany, the Orient, was establisbed, which took over all the steamers in the East s'atic Company's fee, the latter retaining only motor ships In December 1 st another new company w sf.rmed under the name of the East Asiatic Industry & Plantation a cipi al of 20,000,0 Ok.. to acq ire the pret company's plantations in the Far East and the Soya Cake Factory. in Copenhagen, thus leaving the On
