Liverpool Tonnage for

Glasgow Owners.

A brisk demand, says the "Journal of Commerce," has 001 « tinued for all classes of tonnage. new as well as second-hand, and prices tend to stiffen still further as the scarcity of suitable craft for various leading trades bo- [somes more

Notwith- 'anding official denials, it is quite currently believed that very considerable orders for new tonnage have been placed by the authorities in the U.S.A., which tonnage has been arranged for. on the basis of distribution to the various lines concerned at the conclusion of the war, so that whilst ostensibly ordered on Government account, such tonn- age is ultimately meant for private concerns.

The spar deck type steamer Drumcliffe, 2,568 tons net register and 6,600 tons dw,, has been sold to through Liverpool brokers Messrs. John Black and Co., Glasgow, for the sum of £95,000, She is an exceptionally fias boat," being fitted with wireless install- ation, electric light, &o.. and was R. built in 1905 by Messr8. Thompson, and Sens, at Sunder- land, her engines and boilers sur plied and fitted by the" North Eastern Marine Engineering Co., of the same port. She recently. special survey and passed reclassed 100 A1 in Lloyd's Register.

Government Position for Mr. Andrew Weir. Mr. Andrew Weir, principal of the Glasgow shipowning firm of Messrs. Andrew Weir and Co., has been appointed Surveyor General of Supply as the head of 3 new Department at the War ffice to take over from the De- partments of the Quartermaster General, the Master General of Ordnance, and the ficance mem- ber of the Army Council,.such of their functions as relate to the commercial side of the business of supplying the Army, except as ta munitions. Mr. Weir is now busily engaged developing the new department, and be is to be assisted by representatives of the department he has taken over.

M.P., as a Dock and Harbour

Authority.

Mr. T. P. O'Connor M.P., who has takes a leading part in the negotiations between the repre- sentatives of the dock and har bour authorities of the British Isles and the Government in respect of dues and tolls for ships engaged on State service, is to be honoured in the immediate future by the gentlemen connected with the harbour and dock authorities by a presentation of plate at a dinner, over which Lord Devon- port is expected to preside.
