SHIPPING NEWS.

Standard Motor Sulps. At this time when the question of building standard ships is occupying the mind of most of us, it must be if interest to ship

waers to note the developments wh ch have taken place of labs in America in the turning out of merchant vessels to standard designs. In this country, asy8 is being pushed ahead on a large the "Journal of Commerce" work number of standard ship, all of the vessels being of the Fall" powered class fided with steam machinery. On the other side of the Atlantic however, the re ciprocating steam engine by to means has the field entirely to itself. American shipowners hold a deal more favour for the oil engine than we do in Britain, with the result that throughout - the United States the many standard cargo carriers under construction are being. given heavy oil motors of the Diesel cr I'semi-Diesel type. As an example, it may be mentioned that the Seattle Dry Docks Co. has been reconstructed for the express purpose of building motor ships, and that firm, which is now known as the Sloan Shipyard Corpǝr- ation, have received their first order, which takes the form of a contract for no fewer than eight full-powered, sa-going motor ships, of about 3,000 tons each. The vessels, which, by the way. will be of wood dnstruction, and sister stipe, will be given twin- screw Dissel machinery about 1,000 b.h.p. Again there has just been completed for the Standard Oil Company, of New Jersey, s I new 3,000 on motor-driven cargo carriers, alaɔ all sister ships. The vessels are auxiliary- powerod schooners, and are in service at the present time be- tween Bouth America and New Turk They are some 250ft. -In length by 43ft, beam, and have s load draft of about 18ft 6in...
