The Unrest in Szechuan. Chengts, May 16.-Wang Jen- wen and Chang Hei, who hate been appointed to investigate the recent trouble, have left Chang. king for Chengta. In Pa-ynia a native of Szechuan and head of the Military Supply Depart- ment, was murdered on Sunday evening. It is supposed that the reason for the crime is that ke was in possession of damaging evidence against people outside the province. The moderate Szechuanese are very anxious for a working agreement to be arriv- ed at between the Szechuanese and the military, officials of the Kaeichow forces. They say that the solation lies in the appoint ment of General Tai Kan as Civil Governor and Hu Wei-ban or General Tea Chunksnan as Military Governor with the add- tion of the restoration of General Lia Cheng-bo to his former position.

A New Motor Fuel. The Manila Bureau of Internal Revenue has recently been trying sa alcohol and gasoline mixture for motor fuel. As yet only s preliminary trial has been made, but the results were so extisfactory that the Acting Collector bse ordered a supply for a thorough teat. This mixture is from four- fiftbe to nine-tenths alcohol, and in manufactured by & number of Manila distillers and sold at prices ranging around P7.50 a cage.

Of course, the alcohol used in this mixture being denstared pays no specific tex: In operating motor vehicles with this fuel slight adjustmenta to the engines are necessary. It bas been discovered that this faid cinnot be used in machines having carburetor with cork floats, se the alcohol eats the varnish cff the cork. Persons contempatting asing alcohol for fuel should see to it that their carburetors have metal floate,

To Protect Soldiers' Eyes. One of the many interesting examples of women's work in war time now being exhibited at the Royal Colonial Institute is a galvanised steel rod chain visor. It bangs on a tin steel rod. round the front of the steel helmet and forms s complete covering for the eyes and nose, being stretched tightly from the nose backwards to each side of, the head, and then fastened by hooks attached to the leather strap of the belmet. When ad- jasted it provides a frm steel dige before the eyes, and..is an effioisht protection against fa splinters of shrapnel. The vision ie not materially interfered with by the steel mesh of the visor, and ordinary rfis firing can be carried on without raising it. If necessary either eye can be uncovered by anhooking the chain from the ear- and sliding, the visor along the steel bar and then hooking the chain on to the brim of the helmet, When not in use it is hooked on to the top of the helmet. The risors are made by women, and are built ap: by band link by link, about four square inches of mesh representing an hour's work: : Some thousands of the visore are now in ure, and it is thought they will prove effective in pres wring the men's eyes, cepacially during bomb attacks...
