THE BUDGET.

NO NEW TAXES PROPOSED.

EXCESS PROFITS TAX INCREASED TO 80 PER CENT.

London, May 2. A preliminary statement explanatory of the Badget shows that the recsipts for the past fiusacial your amounted to £573,428,000, exoseding the Estimate by £71,153,000.

The principal increases over the Estimates were :—Income Tax, #10,000,000; Excess Profita Daty, £53,920,000; Estate Duties, £1,232,000; Stampe, #878,000: Telegraphs, #100,000; Crown Landa, $100,000; and Miscellaneous, #13 000,000,

The decrease comprise-Pontal," £1,650,000; Telephones, £450.000; Customs, $439,009; and Excise, 63,620,000, The expenditure amounted to 62,198,113,000.

Mr. Bonar Law's Speech.

London, May 2. In introducing the Badget, Mr. Bonar Law stated that the estimate of advances to the Allies and Dominions had been exceeded. by $100,000,000, but he was glad to say that the Dominions had both the will and the power to supply so much from their own resources that there was no increasing strain apon the British Exchequer. The Loans to the Allies last year totalled £540,000,000 and to the Dominions £54,000,000. Since the beginning of the war the advances had been £828,000,000 and £142,000,000 respectively. The National Debt was now £3 854,000,000, less the loans he had just mentioned. A large amount of expenditure was now being met from revenue. No belligerent could show such satisfactory figures The Iset War Loan, incloding Treasury Bills, smounted to £968,- 048,000, the conversions of 4 per cent. Stock to £722,005,000, and the conversions of 4 per cent. Stock to #22,658,000. The Govern- ment proposed no new taxes, but only additions to three existing

The Entertainment Tax yielded last year three millions, and the additional daty would yield a farther million-and-a-half. It was proposed to increase the Tobacco Tex again by a shilling and tonpence per pound, which produces six millions, and to make the Excesa Preâte Duty eighty instead of sixty per cent. The new daty is retrospective from January 1, hat concessions will be made respecting interest on new ospital introduced since "the war. Tue additional yield of this tar is estimated at £20,000,000.
