THE BATTLES IN THE WEST.

Thirty-Three German Divisions Practically Destroyed.

London, May 1. Except for the new French thrust east of Rheime, there is a comparative lall in the Western battle. This, however, is merely a an breathing space necessary before shifting forces for fresh onslaughts.

There is increased serial nativity, which is usual at such times, when seroplane observations are the main souros of information regarding the enemy's movements.

The weather pleasantly and remarkably contrasts with that of last week. Quagmires hare disappeared, shell craters have dried up, but the impoverished ground is absolutely bare and gaunt. Shell-slashed trees stand ghastly naked in the strong sumbine, and marching troops are covered with white dast. Water is soaros, but German dug-outa affərd liberal supplies of beverages.

According to French estimates, General Tos Hindenburg has already thrown in thirty-three of his forty-three reserve Divisions, and all the former are practically useless.

It is reported that General von Hindenburg recently visited the Lens district and was faripas at the low of Vimy, and re- primanded the commanders.
