New York Passanger Traffic.
En increase of about :50,900in the number of passengers brothe to New York by the various steamship.companies during the year 1916, sa compared with the record for. 1915, is shown in the annual report of the landing agent at Ellis Island. The reserd shows a decline of more than 30 per cent. from the figures for the last normal year, 1913. ga The War and the Bengal Pilots,
A careful compilation of all the war services of the Bengal Tot Bervice abows that out of a total? of sixty-three cfficers, including loadsmen, sixteen have prossed- rd on active service, while one (Mr. Huddy) resigned the Berdee to join the Royal Flying Corps. MR. C. G. Stock, the Senior. Officer, who retired in 1916 after some thirty years" service, is now at the front as a lieutenant in the Royal Engineers.
The Glenfarg← Attempts are to be made by Japanese salvage company salva the s.s. Glenfarg, 3,674 tons struck a rock and foundered off" Shira:e
the Lighthouse, in Goto Island läst It is estimated that even if the ship cannot be raised, the amcunt of steel material that will be recovered will smply repay the cost of the operations. A Japaarse salvage company will also make an attempt to salve the Russian Volunteer Flest a. Poltava ich foundered off North B ddie Island on March 21. The salvage steamer for this purpose has arrived here.
Panama Canal-Slides

Sibert, on his return to Fort Miley from the Canal Zone. The General had been absent nearly three months. The defences of the canal. also are in good condition, he said, and likely to be improved as the War Department may think fit, cog~ sequent upon & report: General Sibert made in Washington jast before returning to San Francisco. While General Sibert would not admit it; it is stated confidently in local army circles that he was sent down to Panama in a burry by the Secretary of War because of his recognised ability a critic of heavy artillery and coast
