Notwithstand- îng unusual conditions, the canal has just about paid expenses since it was reopened to traffic on April 15, 1916. The landslips in Culebra Cut, which closed the canal in September, 1915, have become a [bɔgey in the shipping world, and many vessels that oth 'rwise would be rated via Panama have taken other routes, rather than run the risk of being held up-from a day to a month at the Isthmus. This in a fictitious fear, because the channel is unobstructed and navigation has been uninterrupt- ed since April for vessels drawing 30ft. of water or less: yet it has done s ̃mething to hold vessels from the Panama route. Not withstanding this, the opera tion and maintenance expenses during the six months ended December 1, amounting to £700,-
