munition werker, named John Doe, was charged at Enfield with stealing s ́ säck of osta, it- wan stated than he was badged and cartikoated, and had been dispbarged from the Army sa medically unit, yet he ran early half a mile carrying the sick of oats before a detective was able to catch up with him. He was sentenced to three months bard labour.

Japanese Destroyers for Allies.

The Asahi states that the Japanese naval authorities have teceived a request from one of the Allied countries for the build- fing of tan destroyers of 800 tons (each, and have accepted the order. Six of the destroyers will be built in the naval atsenal", and two sach at the Kawasaki and Mit- abishi shipbuilding yards. Last | year ten destroyers were bails in the naval arsenals and private yards in the course of six months, and it je proposed to build the ten Losts ordered by the foreign Government at the same speed.

Convent on Fire.

Fire broke cut shortly after midnight recently at the Convent in Norman Road, West Kensing ton. The outbreak cecurred on the ground floor, and the nuns found it impossible to escape. |They appeared at the bedroom windows; and two women olimted on to the sills, with the evident intention of jumping down.
